Edinburgh 10km race May 3, 2009

My first race!! I was hoping to complete the race in around an hour (ideally just under the 1 hour mark). My first mistake was to be truthful about my estimated run time. I put myself in the 56-1hr bracket and was in the third wave of 10000 people. There were so many extremely slow runners ahead of me - some were even walking after 2km! I should have tried to get to the front of the wave - I’m sure I ran twice the distance runing round everyone.

Despite this I ran the first 3km in exactly 15 mins and was at the 5km mark at 28 mins (some uphill in this part). This means I ran the second 5km in 27:45 (faster than the first section). I guess I could have saved around about 40 seconds if I wasn’t stuck behind people walking in the narrow stretches.

I really enjoyed the race, weather was sunny but not too hot. A great day!

I did 20 mins on the turbo trainer followed by a 5km run. I took it easy on the bike section and managed my usual time of 26 mins for the 5km. Legs felt rough for the first half mile but was easy after that. It took me 30 secs to change shoes and next time I’ll try to unvelcro the bike shoes before I finish the ride. Sitting down to put the running trainers on is definitely the best way - my legs were so wobbly!

10km run with friend April 17, 2009

I thought I was the one who would have to be stopping every few minutes as I’ve only done upto 5km runs recently. I felt good but my friend had some pains so we walked some of the way. Time was not bad considering but I’m hoping for something closer to the 1 hr mark next time.

a variety of sit-ups, press ups and free weights. The weights are feeling easier so might have to move up another Kg on each, all good news :)

I did just 30 mins in the garage before complete boredom set in. It’s a shame I don’t have time for a ‘real’ ride during the week, it’s been lovely weather here. Fingers crossed that the weekend stays fine.

I felt a little more comfortable than last time I went on the bike - I really need an odometer so I know how much I’m doing. Will look around for one later today.

Felt stronger tonight and managed a slightly better time than previously. Still got a lot to do to catch up so I’m back where I was 2 weeks ago.
