did it in 8 mins 10. I had previously recorded a time of 7 min 30 sec and am now thinking that I miss counted and only swam 18 lengths not 20 oops! still I’m finding my breathing a bit easier so looking forward to some coaching in the New Year.

Lesson Learned December 17, 2008

Went out this sunny, crisp and cold lunchtime with the aim of doing my usual 3 mile route. I was feeling a bit thirsty before I set off so I had half a cup of water. I started out (without water bottle) pretty fast and by the end of the first mile my legs were feeling a bit wobbly so I slowed down. I managed to complete just over 2 miles before I reluctantly gave up. My body was in need of some water. I must have been desperately dehydrated. Lesson = DRINK MORE WATER.

I’m not a big fan of drinking water especially on cold winter days, I prefer good old English Tea with a dash of milk, no sugar- maybe I’ll switch to hot water instead.

I checked my watch to see my time and was pleasently suprised to see I had improved on my speed despite not being able to complete the run.

Maybe next time… Although I need to remember to take it slowly, this was only my 4-5th run of the since I started!

Other News: I’ve been searching for my first road bike and have finally settled on a  Trek. I rang my LBS and asked them to get one in for me to try out. I go for my test run/fit on Christmas Eve (it also just happens to be the day before my birthday! Coincidence?)

Practised breathing every 3 strokes instead of 2. Felt a bit uncomfortable but managed 250m without stopping. Also did a couple of 500m swims but forgot my watch so couldn’t time them. At the end of the session I worked on my legs - did 250m using a kick board.

Last night I got on the Gym bike with the aim to do around 40 mins. I nearly gave up at 10 mins and then at 20mins. It was really hard work. I carried on however and the last 20 mins was great, my legs were moving smoothly and I had no discomfort.

As I neared the end I caught a glimpse of the treadmills on the other side of the gym. I know I needed to practise my bike to run but I get reverse motion sickness on the treadmills (had a bit of an incident a couple of years back). I was feeling brave so I hopped on the treadmill straight after the bike and jogged half a mile before walking to cool down.

My legs felt fine doing this but I had a stitch immediately which I think might be due to my riding position on the bike. I wasn’t completely destroyed and could have probably run a couple of miles at a decent pace (not on a treadmill).

Decided to do a run before breakfast with OH. Was nice to have some company and didn’t realise I was doing a slightly faster pace. Had some soreness in hamstrings but otherwise OK.

It felt like my first swim December 10, 2008

I spent my swim session practising my front crawl stroke. I think I used to be a pretty good swimmer when I was a kid (I started learning at the age of 2) but I’ve picked up some really bad habits over the years.

After reading some tips and watching some footage I realised I wasn’t allowing my outstretched arms to ‘almost meet’ when infront of me. My old style was to do some kind of windmill thing where my arms are almost 180 degrees apart. I got in the pool and took it really slow and practised getting into the rythmn. I could definitely feel there was more power in the stroke. I’m lucky that using ‘S-shaped stroke’ comes naturally to me so I’m hoping this doesn’t need any work.

My Gym doesn’t offer any swim coaching but they reccomended someone to me. I gave them a ring and hopefully I’ll have a couple of sessions with them in January.

Towards the end of the swim I did 500m without stopping and it felt fine on my arms. My legs were another matter. After my 3 mile run at lunch my legs were completely dead and it felt like I was just dragging them behind me!

I can’t wait to give this another go when my legs are fresher.
